Saudi Arabia has many hidden gems, Al-Ahsa being one of them which is rich in historical sites and traditional markets. Did you know that it’s the world’s largest oasis and the first UNESCO-listed city in the Gulf? In early Islamic days, it was the point of entry for pilgrim caravans from those countries crossing towards Mecca (which is located on the Western side of the country) for pilgrimage.

While most of Saudi Arabia is arid desert, Al-Ahsa has palm trees, green areas and over 150 naturally occurring springs of warm, hot and cold water. It also has over 10,000 hectares of agricultural land that produce some of the best types of dates in the world. 

Trip program:

We’ve taken the hassle out of driving so you can sit back and relax and enjoy the scenery. The tour includes a modern bus along with a tour guide who will provide information on the history and importance of this Oasis which will no doubt be an exciting and educational trip for the whole family and give your kids something interesting to talk about when they go back to school.

The bus will leave Dana Beach Resort at 9am on the designated days and will take an hour to reach Al-Ahsa and return at 5pm the same day. The tour will start in the middle of the Green Oasis which includes a visit to the famous Dougha Al-Gharsh Pottery Factory located within the caves of Al Qarah Mountains. Dougha Handmade Pottery Factory is a must see for any visitors to the famous Al-Ahsa landmark which provides many photo opportunities. You will no doubt notice the striking display at the entrance featuring rows of upturned pots showing various shades of clay which is representative of the importance of pottery in the Islamic world.

Taking in all the sites will no doubt make you hungry and you’ll need to refuel in order to provide you with energy for the 2nd half of the tour. A traditional lunch will be served at Dar Basma (or alternate) Tourist Restaurant.

Post lunch you’ll be taken to the historic center of Al Hofuf which includes a visit to the Al-Qaysariyah Market, the most famous historical market in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where you will get to view and have opportunity to purchase some of the traditional products and famous handicrafts. Next is a visit to the artisan market, which was recently opened and a visit to the popular bakery where you can enjoy a rare treat of red bread (dates). Armed with beautiful memories and history of the region, you will then board the bus which will take you back to the resort where you will arrive around 5pm, in time to catch the sunset.
